Ms. Rebeca Filomeno-Nason

Rebeca Filomeno-Nason was appointed the interim principal of Newcomer Academy in August 2024.

Ms. Filomeno-Nason holds a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Rhode Island College, as well as a Master of Arts in School Counseling from Seton Hall University. She also obtained her administrator certification through the Principal Residency Network at the Center for Leadership and Educational Equity. Ms. Filomeno-Nason holds a bachelor's degree in Human Development from Lesley University.

Ms. Filomeno-Nason began her tenure at Providence Public School District (PPSD) as assistant principal at DelSesto Middle School in 2017 before transitioning to the districtwide MLL program. Prior to this, she worked as dean of students and a school counselor at Sheila C. “Skip” Nowell Leadership Academy serving a population of students with diverse and unique needs for four years. She also served as an early childhood educator teaching first and second grade at the Learning Community Charter School in Central Falls for seven years.

Rebeca Filomeno-Nason has served as Director and Manager of Multilingual Learner (MLL) Instruction and Services for PPSD for the last four years, and has worked in PPSD for the last eight years. She also works as clinical coach, supervisor, and adjunct professor at Rhode Island School for Progressive Education providing direct support and coaching to candidates for certification as teachers of MLLs in Rhode Island. 

As PPSD's Director of MLL Instruction and Services, Ms. Filomeno-Nason supported schools across K-12 in the implementation of quality programs for MLLs. She has strong, existing relationships with many students and families in Newcomer Academy and across the District. Her vision of education is rooted in the belief that every student deserves a quality and rigorous educational experience that fosters critical thinking and values and uplifts students through meaningful relationships. 

Active in the Providence community, Ms. Filomeno-Nason is bilingual (English and Spanish) and the co-founder of the Rhode Island Coalition for Educators of Color and co-president of the Center for Leadership and Educational Equity. She was recognized as an A+ Administrator Honoree and a YWCA Women of Achievement Honoree.
