• Multilingual Learners at Nathanael Greene Middle School

NGMS serves 240 multilingual learners from grades 6-8. The school uses the sheltered instruction model where teachers use SIOP strategies to build background knowledge, provide comprehensible input and fortify output for multilingual learners.

Through this program model teachers work to build academic language, learn content vocabulary and strengthen literacy skills through subject area classes. Students with Access levels 1.0-3.9 also take a specific English language development (ELD) course. This course is targeted based on the students’ language proficiency level and supports their English reading, writing and speaking growth.

NGMS works to meet the vision and mission of the Providence Schools Multilingual Learners Program and provide a culturally responsive curriculum.
