Carol Amaya

Carol Amaya is the current Assistant Principal at Asa Messer Elementary School. She has been working in education for the past nine years, the last five in the Providence Public School District (PPSD).

Prior to coming to PPSD, she served as a coordinator and educational leader for various university, secondary, and elementary academic programs in Rhode Island and California centered around developing rigorous, antiracist, and culturally responsive curriculum for multilingual learners and BIPOC students centered on literacy development, and increasing Latinx family engagement in schools.

Before becoming an Assistant Principal at Asa Messer, she taught Social Studies and Civics at Mount Pleasant High School, PCTA, and Alvarez High School. She also served as the Humanities, Social Studies, and Civics Coordinator for PPSD. She comes from an immigrant working-class family and is half Guatemalan and half Salvadoran. She is a first generation college graduate, and is fully bilingual.

Carol earned her Bachelor's degrees in Latin American and Latino Studies, Sociology, and a minor in Education from the University of California, Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz, California. She then received her Master's in Teacher and Secondary Education in History and Social Studies from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Carol has a sense of responsibility, love, and commitment to the young people of Providence. As a transformative educator, her vision for Asa Messer Elementary School is to strengthen and support teachers and improve learning experiences and instruction for students.

Dena Nunez

Dena Nunez is the current Assistant Principal at Asa Messer Elementary School. She has worked her entire 27 years in education in the Providence Public School District (PPSD), and has been an Assistant Principal for one year.

Dena earned her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island. She then received her Master's degree in Bilingual and Bicultural Education and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Rhode Island College in Providence, Rhode Island.

Dena's vision for Asa Messer Elementary School is to encourage students to have a sense of pride in being multilingual.
