College Signing:
Janel Ramos has a remarkable story to tell. At age 11, she left her mother and family in Guatemala to immigrate to the U.S. and join her father, whom she hadn’t seen in more than three years.
Today, despite the challenges of a new culture and a new language, she is ranked near the top of her class, with a GPA of 94.19 and a score of AP classes under her belt. The first in her family to graduate high school, Janel will attend the College of the Holy Cross this fall.
Janel has reveled in her experiences at Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School, as a member of the English Language Learners mentoring program, senior class council, Young Ladies of Alvarez and Guitar Ensemble.
“I have loved going to Alvarez. It’s such a small school with a real sense of community. I got to know everybody, and now I’m so excited about the [college] experience. I saw a girl in the library and she showed me this section of history books I never saw before,” she said. And why is that important ? “Because history teaches us what to expect based on what has happened before,” she says.
Her guidance counselor, Mr. Tedeschi, adds, “Being separated from her mother and the rest of her family is an extremely challenging obstacle to overcome. However, Janel has not let these setbacks deter her from maintaining her focus on her academics and her future. She is always smiling, friendly and never complains.”
Janel Ramos tiene una historia excepcional. A los 11 años, dejó a su madre y a su familia en Guatemala para emigrar a los Estados Unidos y reunirse con su padre, a quien no había visto en más de tres años.
Hoy, a pesar de los desafíos de una nueva cultura y un nuevo idioma, está clasificada como la mejor de su clase, octava entre 150 estudiantes, con un promedio de calificaciones de 94.19 y un sinfín de clases avanzadas. Janel, la primera en su familia en graduarse de la escuela secundaria, asistirá al College of the Holy Cross este otoño.
Janel ha disfrutado sus experiencias en la Escuela Secundaria Dr Jorge Alvarez, como miembro del programa de tutoría para estudiantes del idioma inglés, miembro de consejo de estudiantes de último año de secundaria, Damas Jóvenes de Alvarez y Ensamble de Guitarras.
“He disfrutado mucho asistir a Alvarez. Es una escuela muy pequeña con un verdadero sentido de comunidad. Conocí a todos, y ahora estoy tan entusiasmada con la experiencia (de lo que está por venir). Vi a una niña en la biblioteca y me mostró esta sección de libros de historia que nunca había visto ", dijo. ¿Y por qué es eso importante?, se le preguntó "Porque (la historia) nos enseña qué esperar basado en lo que ha sucedido anteriormente", dijo.
“Estar separada de su madre y del resto de su familia es un reto extremadamente difícil de superar. Sin embargo, Janel no ha dejado que estos contratiempos desvíen su enfoque en sus estudios académicos y su futuro”, dijo su consejero escolar, el Sr. Tedeschi. "Ella siempre está sonriendo, amable y nunca se queja”.
