PROVIDENCE, RI – Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) Deputy Commissioner Lisa Odom-Villella and Providence Public School District (PPSD) Superintendent Dr. Javier Montañez witnessed firsthand the innovative projects, skills, and achievements demonstrated by the remarkable of STEM students participating in the PPSD Summer Learning Program at DelSesto Middle School who have engaged in 'SeaPerch' underwater robotics program, which was hosted at the Boys & Girls Club of Providence indoor pool. This program is a collaborative effort between Electric Boat, RoboNation, and the Providence Public School District.

"We believe in nurturing a generation of thinkers, innovators, and problem solvers who are ready to take on the challenges of the future," said Deputy Commissioner Lisa Odom-Villella. “Events like these exemplify the power of education-industry partnerships in preparing our students for success. We’re proud that the event today was able to showcase the dedication of our educators and the commitment to providing our students with the tools they need to thrive academically, in their chosen fields, and beyond."

During the visit, Deputy Commissioner Odom-Villella and Superintendent Montañez had the opportunity to observe the vibrant learning environment and interact with students and program coordinators.

Middle school summer STEM programs joined forces to engage students in the summer SeaPerch program, which included professional development for teachers provided by Electric Boat, along with robot-building kits for students at no cost. Notably, two dedicated teachers from these programs collaborated over the summer to develop a comprehensive curriculum for a 90-day SeaPerch elective, set to be offered in five middle schools starting this fall. Electric Boat and RoboNation have organized competitive events for Providence Public Schools District middle school students. These events feature obstacle courses where student teams maneuver their underwater robots, showcasing their technical prowess and collaborative spirit. This initiative fosters excitement and innovation among students, while also enhancing teamwork skills.

The success of the Summer SeaPerch event underscores the commitment of Providence Public Schools to providing cutting-edge educational opportunities and empowering students to thrive in the modern world. The collaborative efforts of Electric Boat, RoboNation, and the Providence Public Schools District continue to inspire excellence and innovation within our schools.
