Providence Public Schools, GD Electric Boat Announce 83 Career Signing Offers to Students at “CTE Electric Boat Signing Day”

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence Public School District (PPSD), in collaboration with General Dynamics Electric Boat (EB), is excited to announce the successful conclusion of the "PPSD CTE Electric Boat Signing Day" event, held at Rhode Island Nursing Education Center (NISEC). The event brought together 85 seniors from various PPSD high schools with 83 students receiving conditional offers for career positions at Electric Boat, marking a 51% increase in the number of offers last year. This is a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between Electric Boat and PPSD, aimed at providing valuable career opportunities for students within the Providence community. Students had the opportunity to receive information about career paths, participate in one-on-one interviews with members of the EB Recruiting team, and potentially receive conditional job offers.

"Partnerships with industry leaders like General Dynamics Electric Boat are paramount in adapting to the evolving educational landscape and equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in the 21st-century workforce,” said Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green. “The collaborative efforts between PPSD and EB showcase a commitment to innovative education, and ensuring students have access to career opportunities in in-demand, high paying CTE fields. These are life changing opportunities for students and their families that allow those who want to continue their education the means to do so.”

"We are so proud of our students for earning conditional offers from a nationally renowned company. The partnership between Electric Boat and PPSD provides great opportunities for our students," said PPSD Superintendent Dr. Javier Montañez. "Events like the PPSD CTE Electric Boat Signing Day demonstrate our commitment to preparing students for successful careers and contributing to the local workforce. Congratulations to all of our students who worked hard to be able to accept an offer!"

"We are thrilled with the turnout and engagement we saw at the PPSD CTE Electric Boat Signing Day event," said Willie Barber of General Dynamics Electric Boat. "It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and ambition of the students as they explored potential career paths in advanced manufacturing and defense."

Throughout the event, students had the chance to engage with Electric Boat staff in a post-interview staging area, where they could ask follow-up questions and gain further insights into the company and its career opportunities. Invited guests from RIDE, the United States Navy, and other key stakeholders were also present to engage with students and discuss workforce development initiatives.

This workforce development opportunity started approximately six weeks ago at each school listed below. School counselors shared information about career opportunities at General Dynamics Electric Boat and invited students to an information session on site with an EB Recruiter.  Following the session, interested students were invited to a PPSD employment portal on EB’s website where they uploaded their resume and filled out an application profile, selecting the trade(s) they are interested in.

CTE students at PCTA, specifically those in Welding, Electrical, HVAC/Plumbing, are versed and skilled in trades that EB hires for.  Selected groups of students from Mount Pleasant and Central participated in a six-night ‘Boat for Next Gen’ program at NEIT & Westerly Education Center with exposure to one trade each evening session.

The success of the event underscores the importance of collaboration between industry and CTE education in providing students with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed in high-demand industries. Moving forward, Electric Boat and PPSD remain dedicated to continuing their partnership and expanding opportunities for students in the Providence community.
