Traveling with a family member, an infant Hawa Grear came to this country from Liberia to build a new life. Now, 18 years later, she is ready to make her next major move: this time, to Providence College, where another new world awaits her.
A student at Juanita Sanchez Education Complex (JSEC), Hawa she says the students, staff and teachers there have been “another family to me.”
“School is a positive place to go,” she says. Pre-calculus is probably her favorite subject. “My teacher – she’s patient and really gets the students. Miss Gormley has been like a mother to me,” she says.
An accomplished athlete, Hawa is the recipient of a Martin Luther King Scholarship and winner of two R.I. State Championships - in the 55’ and 300’ yard sprints. She says her sport helps her process her changing world. “It makes me feel good, strong,” she says. “Mentally and physically, track is a hard sport but it makes me a strong person.”
Viajando con un miembro de familia, siendo un bebé Hawa Grear llegó a este país desde Liberia para empezar una nueva vida. Ahora, 18 años después, está lista para embarcase en su próxima importante trayectoria: esta vez, Providence College, donde otro mundo nuevo la espera.
Estudiante del Complejo Educativo Juanita Sanchez (JSEC), Hawa dice que los estudiantes, el personal y los maestros han sido "otra familia para mí".
"La escuela es un lugar positivo a donde ir", dijo. Precálculo es probablemente su materia favorita. “Mi maestra, es paciente y entiende muy bien a los estudiantes. La señorita Gormley ha sido como una madre para mí”, dijo.
Hawa, una atleta consumada, recibió una beca Martin Luther King y ganó dos campeonatos estatales de R.I., en los sprints de 55 'y 300'. Ella dice que su deporte la ayuda a procesar su mundo cambiante. "Me hace sentir bien, fuerte", dijo. "Mental y físicamente, el atletismo es un deporte duro, pero me convierte en una persona fuerte".
Y aunque el crucero para graduados de último año de secundaria se canceló debido a la pandemia, no así las lecciones que aprendió en la vida y en su trabajo. Se graduará entre los tres estudiantes más destacados de JSEC y llevará consigo las habilidades y la pasión para tener éxito: hasta llegar a una escuela de la División 1 y cruzar otra metal final”.
