College Signing:
Jennifer Santiago Plaza, a graduating senior at Mt. Pleasant High School, is an impassioned young woman whose love for family and community is matched only by her love of science and the workings of the brain.
This fall, Jennifer will enter Northeastern as the first in her family to go to college, and she goes with a scholarship worth $300,000, covering tuition, housing, books, and more. “It’s crazy!” she says. But it also means that she’ll be able to pursue her dream of becoming a neuroscientist. She was, in fact, accepted at eight out of 10 colleges and universities she applied to.
The four years at Mt. Pleasant studying bioengineering, “set me up for something successful.” The cohort model of teachers and students was a true “love bond” like no other, she says. “We have such love for each other - like a family,” she says. And they were always there to support her and one another, even during the difficult times, including her engineering and chemistry teacher, advisor and “friend,” Brianne Fagan. “She believed in me and been there like nobody else has. She helped make this dream possible of going to college for free. She wrote a six-page recommendation for the Northeastern University Torch Scholarship and she attended the seven-hour interview with me. I am really thankful for everything she’s done for me,” Jennifer says.
Coming to the United States from Puerto Rico just seven years ago, Jennifer says the idea that she could “achieve this dream just seemed impossible. I had a lot of responsibility outside of school - helping my mother and my sister and her two-year old child…managing to defeat multiple struggles,” she said.
