Data Privacy Overview

  • The Providence Public School District is committed to making sure the privacy rights of our students and families are protected. There are federal rules and guidelines that we must follow for releasing student information. The District complies with federal law and has adopted a policy and series of procedures to manage our data and protect family and pupil rights to privacy. The Office of Data & Assessment reviews all internal and external requests to collect or access data. The federal laws governing privacy rights are shown below.

     

    ESSA Information

    The is the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act – the federal law affecting education from kindergarten through high school. As part of this law, parents have clearly defined rights and choices regarding their children’s education.

     

    FERPA Information

    (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.

     

    PPRA Information

    gives parents and students (18 years or older or emancipated) certain rights when a school conducts student surveys, collects and uses information for marketing purposes, and administers certain physical exams to students.

     

    COPPA Information

    imposes certain requirements on operators of websites or online services directed to children under 13 years of age, and on operators of other websites or online services that have actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information online from a child under 13 years of age.
