High School

  • The High School system at Providence Public Schools serves youth in grade 9 through 12 within nine high schools – 360 High School, Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School, Providence Career and Technical Academy, Central High School, Classical High School, E-Cubed Academy, Hope High School, Mount Pleasant High School and Juanita Sanchez High School. To help improve student performance, schools have implemented purposeful implementation of research based strategies for English Language Learners (ELL) and non-ELL students. Teachers work to create student-centered and culturally relevant instructional strategies for their classrooms. Principals and teachers use collaborative lesson planning to integrate the variable subject matters. Overarching goals include developing and implementing positive school culture alongside increasing student engagement and learning.

    360 High School

    Serving approximately 300 students, 360 High School is an innovative Carnegie School designed by students, families, staff and community. Student voice is incorporated into many facets of the school operations. This small learning community focuses on student leadership development and mastery-based learning. It also offers collaborative ESL instruction and special education inclusion classes.

    Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School

    With an enrollment of approximately 800, Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School offers student-centered, culturally responsive learning. Academic offerings include seven AP courses. The school also stresses personal development, which students can pursue through a number of community partnerships and before and after-school programs. Special education inclusion and exceptional child programs are available.

    Central High School

    Central High School offers blended learning opportunities to its approximately 1,200 general education and ESL students. Career and technical programs available at Central High School include business entrepreneurship, law and public safety & security. Through a dual enrollment program, eligible students may take select courses during the day at the Community College of Rhode Island. For students requiring special education services, offerings range from inclusion to self-contained programs.

    Hope High School

    Hope High School offers high-quality learning opportunities to its approximately 950 general education and ESL students. It is also an early adopter of restorative practices. Career and technical programs include theatre, music, visual arts, programming & web development and JROTC. Among its special education offerings are inclusion, self-contained, autism and exceptional needs programs. Beyond regular school hours, Hope High School offers a number of before and after-school programs.

    Classical High School

    Recently recognized as a national Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education, Classical High School is known for its rigor, offering 24 Advanced Placement courses. Each year, graduating seniors garner more than $20 million in scholarships and grants. Its enrollment of approximately 1,100 scholars is competitive and exam-based. Classical High School is home to a special education inclusion program.

    E-Cubed Academy

    E-Cubed Academy*

    E-Cubed is a small learning community of approximately 400 students. New this year, freshmen students are part of the P-TECH information technology program that offers hands-on instruction, industry exposure and college credits in the IT industry. Freshmen must apply for the program separately from the school lottery. In grades 9-12, restorative practices and peer mediation play key roles in a school culture that emphasizes student voice. E-Cubed Academy offers English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and is home to a special education inclusion program.

    JSEC

    JSEC: The Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex*

    The nearly 500 students enrolled at Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex (JSEC) benefit from rigorous learning opportunities. New this fall for freshmen, a teacher academy career pathway has been added to the career and technical offerings in biotechnology and computer science. Freshmen attending JSEC will be enrolled in one of the three CTE pathways and must apply separately from the school lottery.The school offers English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, as well as special education inclusion and exceptional needs programs.

    PCTA

    Providence Career & Technical Academy

    In this state-of-the-art career and technical school, approximately 650 students choose from the following career pathways: automotive technology, carpentry and homebuilding, cosmetology, culinary arts, electrical technology, general construction, maritime pipefitting, maritime sheet metal, maritime welding, media arts, pastry arts and pre-engineering. Community partners such as the Brown Robotics Lab, Tech Collective, Electric Boat, IBEW and LIUNA. PCTA offers English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and is home to both inclusion and self-contained special education programs.
